A Quick Look At The Conference Semi-Finals
EASTERN CONFERENCE:
#1 Ottawa Senators vs. #7 BOSTON BRUINS
Season matchup: 4-0-0 OTT
Goalie matchup: Niemi (Ott) vs. Roloson (Bos)
Sv% rd1: .908 vs. .919
The Ottawa Senators went down 0-3 against the NY Islanders before coming back in style to win the series 4-3. The Bruins on the other hand were able to advance after a hard fought seven game series with #2 seed Florida Panthers. Can the Bruins knock out another top seed, this time the President Trophy winners? The Senators have to be seen as huge favorites, but the Bruins performed fairly well in the first round. The Senators 'did' win all four meetings during the regular season, but we've seen that anything can happen in these playoffs (see Chicago example below).
#5 Winnipeg Jets vs. #6 Toronto Maple Leafs
Season matchup: 2-2-0 TIE
Goalie matchup: Anderson (Win) vs. Bryzgalov (Tor)
Sv% rd1: .920 vs. .937
The Maple Leafs were the first team to qualify for the CSF by beating the #3 seed Pittsburgh Penguins in five games, impressive. The Jets on the other hand beat the NY Rangers by 4-2, never really looking like they'd lose. This is a series that could really go either way. Bryzgalov should have the edge in net and if Toronto's top line can continue to produce they have a good chance. The Jets know how to win though, winning season 6 and 8 (as Atlanta), so never bet against a champion. The season series finished all square, so no reason to think it'll be any different now = close series.

Thomas is however the main reason, along with a couple of other AHL 7 champs, why they might just be the slight favorites here. This could really go either way though and it'll be vital for the Predators to get their offense going.

Bruins Advance To Next Round
The #7 seeded Boston Bruins have eliminated the #2 seed, the Florida Panthers in the first round of the AHL playoffs. It was an offensive series with a lot of goals and a lot of shots on net. Veteran netminder Dwayne Roloson was able to outplay the less experienced Corey Crawford in the Panthers net, which was key for the Bruins success in this series. Even though Roloson had a staggering 3.45 GAA, his Sv% was a solid .919. Crawford on the other hand had a horrendous 4.46 GAA with a less than impressive .875 Sv%, obviously not good enough.
The Bruins knew the Panthers had one weak (or weaker) link in net. And when the Boston forwards where able to deliver offense game in and game out, it was enough to advance to the next round. The final score for the seven game series looked like this:

The Bruins offense was lead by Rick Nash who put up an impressive 8 goals, 8 assists for 16 points. His linemate for the first couple of games, Ryan Callahan, also impressed with 7 goals, 7 assists for 14 points. He was moved to the 2nd line and continued to produce with his new linemates. This move was made to give the 2nd line a spark after they hadn't produced during the first three-four games of the series.
On defense a surprise was to see Andrej Meszaros being the top point producer with his 7 points. But it was even more surprising that the clubs top defenseman and best point producer during the regular season, Ryan Suter, only picked up a single assist during the seven games. He was however mainly used in a shutdown role with fellow d'man Mark Fayne as they had +7 (Fayne) and +6 (Suter) in the plus/minus column.

A Look At The Playoff Matchups
EASTERN CONFERENCE:
#1 Ottawa Senators vs. #8 NY Islanders
Season matchup: 2-1-1 NYI
Goalie matchup: Niemi (Ott) vs. C.Ward (NYI)
Edge: Niemi had the better regular season, but Ward could steal some games.
So even though Ottawa is the #1 seed, it was the Islanders who had the upper hand during the regular season. This could prove to be a closer series than one might think. 4-3 OTT.
#2 Florida Panthers vs. #7 BOSTON BRUINS
Season matchup: 2-1-1 FLA
Goalie matchup: Crawford (Fla) vs. Roloson (Bos)
Edge: Crawford had the better season, but Rollie has been a stellar playoff performer.
The Florida Panthers didn't have much difficulties with the Bruins, but the Bruins 'did' win the final game between the clubs, at Florida by a 2-1 score. Due to the Bruins' poor play heading into the playoffs, we'll say 4-2 FLA.
#3 Pittsburgh Penguins vs. #6 Toronto Maple Leafs
Season matchup: 2-0-2 PIT
Goalie matchup: Hiller (Pit) vs. Bryzgalov (Tor)
Edge: Both had good numbers, but Hiller was better and feels more solid.
The Penguins didn't lose a single game vs. Toronto, so should this be any indication of what we'll see in this playoff matchup, the Penguins should advance. Therefore we'll say 4-1 PIT.
#4 NY Rangers vs. #5 Winnipeg Jets
Season matchup: 4-0-0 WIN
Goalie matchup: Price (NYR) vs. Anderson (Win)
Edge: Slight edge to Price during the season. Price should and needs to be better here.
The closest series on paper is the most loopsided looking at the games during the regular season. If this continues or not we'll see. I think it'll be closer than that, 4-2 WIN.
WESTERN CONFERENCE:
#1 San Jose Sharks vs. #8 Chicago Blackhawks
Season matchup: 4-0-0 S.J
Goalie matchup: Lundqvist (S.J) vs. Vokoun (Chi)
Edge: Vokoun had better numbers and needs to outplay Lundqvist to give his team a chance.
No contest, right? Well, probably not looking at what the Sharks did to the Blackhawks during the regular season. But one should never bet against a group like Chicago, or? The Sharks feel too strong, 4-1 S.J.
#2 Minnesota Wild vs. #7 St. Louis Blues
Season matchup: 3-1-0 MIN
Goalie matchup: Dubnyk (Min) vs. Kiprusoff (Stl)
Edge: Dubnyk had the better numbers, but Kipper is capable of playing big when needed.
The Wild won the first three games over the Blues during the regular season, but the Blues 'did' get an impressive 8-4 win in the final game with Crosby in the lineup. I'm sorry, this could go either way, but I'll go for the surprise win, 4-3 STL.
#3 Nashville Predators vs. #6 Dallas Stars
Season matchup: 3-1-0 DAL
Goalie matchup: Quick (Nas) vs. Rinne (Dal)
Edge: Rinne had the better stats, but both had great seasons. Quick needs to match that.
Dallas won the first three games vs. the Predators, but the Preds won the last one and have home-ice advantage. Will NHL Conn Smythe winner Quick carry his team or will Rinne be enough for the Stars, who knows. I don't. I'll go with 4-2 NAS.
#4 Phoenix Coyotes vs. #5 Vancouver Canucks
Season matchup: 2-1-1 VAN
Goalie matchup: Luongo (Phx) vs. Thomas (Van)
Edge: Luongo had amazing numbers, but so did Thomas. Should be a great goalie matchup.
Vancouver only lost the last game between the two clubs, but in that game Tim Thomas was rested. This could go either way, but I think Thomas could be the difference, 4-2 VAN.
