Bruins Active, Make Two Trades

The Bruins had been working the phones (or rather e-mail) the last couple of days in an attempt to bring in some upgrades in defensive spots. Two deals had been in the works for some time, but it took longer to finalize them than Bruins management had hoped. Because one deal was needed to make the other, a lot of time was put into getting it done. In the end, management felt that it was necessary to make the deals to try and get the best possible team on the ice for the start of the season.

In the first deal, the Bruins sent offensive defenseman Andrej Meszaros, rookie forward Jim O'Brien and versatile veteran forward Jamal Mayers to the St. Louis Blues. In exchange, the Bruins got physical defensive defenseman Tim Gleason and checking forward Tom Kostopoulos. As had already been agreed, Kostopoulos was only acquired to be moved in the other deal that had been agreed on.

The second deal saw the Bruins add goaltender Scott Clemmensen from the Detroit Red Wings. The Bruins sent goalie Curtis Sanford and forward Tom Kostopoulos the other way. The upgrade in net might be slight, but we like the guy we're getting a bit more and that's always something we look at.

The addition of Tim Gleason and Scott Clemmensen means that we feel that we've upgraded two positions that we felt we lacked enough depth at. We would've liked to have kept one of the two forwards dealt in the Gleason deal, but we have no regrets and are happy with what we've been able to do. Some minor deals are rumored to be in the making, but most likely nothing major will happen before the start of the regular season.
