The Bruins weren't sure if they'd be jumping into trade waters at the deadline or not. The main objective was to see if an all-round forward could be brought in. In order to do so, the Dallas 1st round pick had to be moved. It was a draft pick management were reluctant to move as it looks to be a deep draft and several players had been scouted by Bruins scouts.
After talks had been held with one team in particular, a deal was finally agreed on. Along with Dallas' 1st rookie pick, the Bruins also sent well-liked and useful forwards Daniel Paille and Gregory Campbell to the Ottawa Senators. In exchange the Bruins received versatile forward Patrick Sharp and winger Brad Richardson. The Bruins never wanted to part with Paille or Campbell, but felt Sharp was exactly the kind of player the team needed.
With the addition of Patrick Sharp, the Bruins feel an important missing piece has been added. He's a welcome addition to a group that perhaps lacked some scoring depth. This should give the Bruins three lines that can contribute in the offensive zone, but also be sound defensively. Sharp gives the team more options and can be used on any of the top three lines in order to give the team more balanced scoring heading into the playoffs.
Brad Richardson is a solid depth player and should fit in well on the 4th line down the stretch. He's got good work ethic and energy which should replace some of which was lost in Campbell and Paille.
At the time of the trade, Sharp was Ottawa's leader in points (68), goals (35), plus/minus (+17), PPG (9), GWG (8), shots (271) and average minutes played by forwards (24.1) through 63 games. We're excited to bring him in and look forward seeing him on the ice with the rest of the group. We also wish Gregory Campbell and Daniel Paille the best of luck. They'll always have a place with the Bruins, and could very well return one day.
