Bruins Add Physical D'man

After losing an important and well-liked part of the D core during the Dispersal Draft in Johhny Boychuk, the Bruins were in search for someone to replace him. First the Bruins drafted stay-at-home d'man Bryan Allen in the 2nd round of the Dispersal Draft. Then in a blockbuster deal, Trevor Daley was acquired as Allen was sent the other way. This time, Trevor Daley was shipped out of Boston even before he could make his debut for the club.

The Bruins are excited to welcome physical d'man Roman Polak to the club. A hard working player who adds a physical dimension to our back six that was lacking a bit after the departure of Boychuk. The complete deal saw the Bruins send Trevor Daley, Brad Richardson, Dan Carcillo and a 3rd rookie pick to Carolina in return for Roman Polak, Kyle Chipchura, Guillaume Latendresse, Peter Mueller and Colby Armstrong.

Part of the deal meant the Bruins had to take on three players who aren't playing in the NHL this season. But this was an agreement we were willing to accept in order to get Polak. The important part for us was to add a d'man who could play well enough for us in front of the net and keep pucks out of it. And since Polak is only 27 years of age, he fits in well with the rest of the group and what we're trying to build here.

Minor Deal, Bruins Swap Goalies

As the Bruins have Tuukka Rask to carry most of the workload, backup goalie Justin Peters was movable. He became attractive to certain GM's since he was playoff eligible and is still fairly young. Since the Bruins also needed to add a body to not be below the league minimum, a deal was quickly agreed on with the Edmonton Oilers. The Bruins sent Peters to Edmonton in return for goalie Thomas Greiss and energy forward Dan Carcillo.

We're happy to add Greiss who should do well in limited action this season. He's basically the same age as Peters and has got the quality to work well in a backup role behind Rask. Adding Carcillo was a bonus since we needed the extra body. He probably won't have a regular roster spot on the team, but can step in if needed.

Bruin of the Day - Thomas Greiss

STATUS: Backup

VALUE: Solid goalie

JERSEY #: 1

ACQUIRED: Trade (Season 11) from Edmonton with Dan Carcillo for Justin Peters

FUTURE: Has the opportunity to step in on any given night and do a solid job. Won't play in many games, but is a goalie who knows his role and can put up respectable numbers.

Bruin of the Day - Dan Carcillo

STATUS: Spare forward

VALUE: Energizer

JERSEY #: 17

ACQUIRED: Trade (Season 11) from Edmonton with Thomas Greiss for Justin Peters

FUTURE: Probably won't get much playing time, but might be used to stir things up. Plays with a lot of energy and in your face type of game. More of a depth forward than anything.

Bruins Involved In Huge Blockbuster Deal

After having a very successful season, but ending up without the main goal - the Cup, Bruins management sat down to try and give the team a chance to make another run for the Cup. The goal was simple, but the way to reaching that goal is difficult. Should we sacrifice well-liked players and big names in order to have a better chance to win? The answer - yes.

The main concern heading into this season was the point production of guys like David Backes and Patrick Sharp who just wouldn't be contributing with what was needed to win (goal wise). Looking over the rosters, there was one team that stood out that had pretty much all the pieces we would need to accept trading guys we liked so much. That team was the New York Rangers.

With a new GM in place, the Rangers were quick to point out that any deal had to include David Backes. When talks started to heat up, another name popped up - Rick Nash. Being one of the poster boys of the franchise for many years, it was clear that moving him would take a lot. But given his recent health issues, management felt it could be time for a change.

Given it was such a big deal, negotiations went smooth because both GM's got a return they were looking for. Some of the aspects to the deal that we liked were 1) that we upgraded our point production and goal-scoring ability, 2) we added a scoring winger in Andrew Ladd to give us two strong lines, 3) we got some good checking line forwards to help at both ends, 4) we feel we upgraded at D with two solid guys and 5) that we got a bit younger at pretty much every position, which should not be underestimated. We didn't trade any old veterans per say, but we aquired several players who haven't even hit their prime yet. We feel there is some potential in a few of them to grow into real good players for us.

There will always be doubts when you trade away key players who you also happen to like a lot. But given the fact we had a very good core group of players, we felt we wanted to add to that instead of just sitting on our hands doing nothing. Since we also get players we like in return, it makes it a bit easier. We might have traded some bigger names, but hopefully our new guys will prove to get the job done as well, and in some cases even better.

Even though the trade was partly made looking at this season, we also like the fact we're getting a bit younger. Had it been the other way around, the deal wouldn't have been as appealing to us. So after given some reasons for making this blockbuster trade that involved a whopping 14 players, here's a breakdown of how the deal looks.

To NYR:
David Backes (USA, age 29)
Rick Nash (Canada, age 29)

Dispersal Draft Results

The Bruins had some tough decisions to make when the new season kick-started with the Dispersal Draft. First off, the Bruins had to leave a couple of players that we didn't want to lose unprotected. This meant we knew we'd be losing a few guys we didn't want to lose. In the end, we lost backup keeper Brian Elliott to the L.A. Kings and d'man Johnny Boychuk to the St. Louis Blues.

This left us with only five d'men, so we had to focus on picking up a solid 6th guy. Bryan Allen was picked up from the Phoenix Coyotes, a stay-at-home d'man who gets the job done. We also decided to protect the rest of our unprotected players by selecting our own Craig Adams. With the final pick of the draft, the available pool of players was very slim so getting Tanner Glass was ok.

However, trade talks began at the draft which resulted in probably the biggest trade in league history where both Allen and Glass were part of the deal...
