Bruins Acquire Defense

After dealing Brent Sopel to the San Jose Sharks a few days ago (read about it here), the Bruins were in the market for a d'man. Since Nathan Gerbe wasn't getting the opportunities to prove himself, he was expendable when the search for a solid d'man began.

After looking at several options, the Bruins sent Gerbe to the Ottawa Senators for Jay Harrison. The Bruins were thin at the back end and needed to add a steady d'man. Harrison will get ice time on even strength and on the penalty kill. He's far from a flashy player and doesn't have the potential that Gerbe has. But as the club didn't plan on protecting Gerbe in the dispersal draft next season, it was a deal that needed to be made.

The Ottawa Senators are playing some great hockey and now add some more firepower up front. Hopefully this deal will also help stop some of the sloppy defensive hockey we've seen from the Bruins lately, which started even before dealing Sopel. If everything works out, Harrison could be re-signed in the off-season.

Bruin of the Day - Jay Harrison

STATUS: 3rd defense pairing

VALUE: Steady D'man

JERSEY #: 44

ACQUIRED: Trade (Season 9) from Ottawa for Nathan Gerbe

FUTURE: He's fairly young and can play solid hockey in his own zone as well as provide some offense. Will get a chance to prove his worth and has the chance to be re-signed for next season.

Bruins Deal Sopel For Pick

The Boston Bruins have today traded veteran defenseman Brent Sopel to the San Jose Sharks for a 2nd round pick. Sopel was added to the club at the very last second of last season's trade deadline as cover at the back. The useful veteran, with highly appreciated shot-blocking abilities, became available as the Bruins had slipped in play during the last couple of weeks.

"We just felt picking up a solid pick for soon-to-be UFA Brent Sopel was an opportunity we couldn't pass on", said team spokesman Bill Ranford. He continued by saying "Had the team been in a better position to compete for the Cup, we'd obviously not be making this kind of deal. Sopel is the kind of veteran every playoff team would like to add for a long playoff run, and we wish him all the best".

With the acquisition of the 2nd round pick, the Bruins now have two 2nd round picks (the other acquired from Toronto). However, the Bruins would like to add a 1st round pick if possible before the trade deadline. "We're not quitting and we're still in the playoff picture. This doesn't really change anything from our game plan heading into the season. But for obvious reasons we want to do whatever we can to put ourselves in a better position for next season", said Ranford. It's rumored Sopel has decided to sign with a Russian KHL team next season, making the decision easier for the Bruins who would lose him for nothing.
